Pine - this wood is very popular for building because the tree grows quickly and has a large area of sapwood, which is quick-drying, permeable and therefore ideal for chemical treating for building purposes. As a carving wood, it can be hard to work because it sometimes compresses if a chisel is used across the grain. For this reason, it is used less frequently for carving. However, it has a very attractive grain and light colour, and accepts stains and other colouring treatments very well.
